Group Relations frameworks have been both influenced by and contributed to the ideas and theory of systems thinking, systems psychodynamics, and socio analysis. It has a foundation in the psychoanalytic approach, particularly as applied to groups.

The Group Relations framework emerged through Group Relations Conferences (GRC), previously known as Working Conferences. GRCs were pioneered by the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, London, way back in 1957, based on the work of W. R. Bion, among others. Over time the design and structure of the conferences have undergone many changes as they were offered and innovated upon in many countries around the globe. The primary focus on unconscious processes in groups and systems, and learning through direct here and now experience, have remained key features. Most Group Relations Conferences focus on issues of exercising authority, leadership, and covert dynamics of a group or organizational life; some may have themes of contemporary social issues.

Group Relations India works with the primary task of offering a variety of educational programmes and workshops for advancing the practice and theory of group relations. It networks with like-minded professional bodies and organisations to further this aim.
